Objectives
This session is co-organised by WEF-LAA Lung Cancer Collaboration / AstrazenecaLung cancer was the most frequently diagnosed cancer in 2022, responsible for almost 2.5 million new cases and claiming 1.8 million lives annually, surpassing other global cancers.Primary prevention such as tobacco control measures and reducing exposure to environmental risk factors are key to reducing the future incidence of lung cancer and save lives, in addition there needs to be targeted actions to tackle the current burden of lung cancer. Early detection and treatment offer survival, but without concerted global efforts, a 30% increase in lung cancer deaths is predicted by 2035. Early diagnosis boosts five-year survival rates from under 10% (stage four) to 63-65% (stage one), also reducing healthcare costs by two to four times compared to late-stage treatment. The session will address the importance of global leadership in elevating lung cancer on the global health agenda, the challenges and opportunities countries face in driving improvements in lung cancer care pathways and lessons learned from implementation of lung cancer programmes.
